Pigmentation
Pigmentation refers to the colouring of your skin. When your skin cells produce too much melanin (the pigment that gives skin its colour), it can result in uneven skin tone, dark spots, or patches, commonly known as hyperpigmentation.
What Causes Pigmentation?
Sun exposure – the number one cause of dark spots and uneven tone
Hormonal changes – such as during pregnancy or from contraceptive use (melasma)
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) – dark marks left behind after acne or injury
Ageing – also known as “age spots” or “liver spots”
Genetics and skin type can also play a role
