Lymphedema is a condition that causes swelling (edema) in one or more parts of the body, typically in the arms or legs. It occurs when the lymphatic system (a part of the immune system that helps remove waste and toxins from the body) is unable to properly drain lymph fluid. As a result, the fluid builds up and causes swelling, which can become painful and lead to other complications.
Lymphedema can be a primary condition, meaning it occurs due to congenital issues with the lymphatic system, or secondary, often caused by damage to the lymphatic system due to surgery (commonly after cancer treatment), radiation, or trauma.
