How does IPL Hair Removal work?

IPL – Intense Pulsed Light is a type of hair removal that uses light to target pigment. IPL has various wavelengths that spread out in the skin. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, heats up, the kills the cells that make the hair grow. The treatment only works during the ‘growing stage’ of the hair, which is why multiple sessions are necessary. This treatment will unfortunately not work on dark skin as the light will be absorbed by the skins melanin and may cause hypo-pigmentation (lightening of the skin). Grey, white or red hairs are also untreatable because there is no pigment in the hair.

Does the Treatment hurt?

IPL hair removal is virtually pain free and very safe. The way I explain the feeling to my clients is an elastic band slapping your skin. Your ski may feel slightly tingly after the treatment, but there will be no pain. You should always have a consultation and patch test before undergoing any sessions. This is to ensure we have all necessary information and are aware of any previous skin conditions or issues that may affect the success of the treatment. The patch test is to make sure your skin will respond positively.

How soon should I expect results?

One of the biggest rules of IPL hair removal is, the results will not happen overnight. The treatment needs to be taken in a series of sessions to be truly effective and the number of treatments required depends of the area treated and the hair type. However, we do advise that six to twelve treatments are the average number needed to achieve long lasting results. Sessions need to be booked in every four to six weeks, allowing time for your hair to grow to the right stage. Every treatment gets rid of at least 20% of the hair in the targeted area.

The Autumn months are the best time to start your course, to be bikini ready for next summer.
