Sun Protection using Dermalogica

Different types of UV radiation:

UVA rays: penetrate through the clouds, glass, shade and can cause premature skin ageing and cancer.

UVB rays: change the colour of the skin after being in contact with the sun, and can cause burning.

UVC rays: is the only radiation not to worry about. UVC radiation is absorbed by the earth’s atmosphere and does not cause any damage to the skin.

How does the SPF sunscreen work?

It’s so important to understand how sunscreen protects your skin. Sun protection comes in a variety of forms. We like to use Dermalogica products such as cream or serum as they are super lightweight and protect the skin for longer. There are two types of SPF - Chemical and Mineral.

Chemical sunscreen contains carbon based active ingredients that absorb UV rays when they hit the skin, they convert them into heat and release it before it can penetrate the dermis and cause damage.

Mineral sunscreen (physical) can rest on top of the skin, where protection lasts longer as opposed to chemical sunscreen.

What is Broad Spectrum?

If sunscreen offers protection from UVB and UVA it qualifies as broad spectrum. UVA protection is very important, applying and reapplying is just as important.
